Exploring in the Media Blackout
I have been toying with the idea of a personal media blackout for a couple of days now. Just because I can't remember when I was away from all media (including print!) for any extended waking hours. Then there was a moment, tonight, when I had just gotten done with working while listening to NPR and had taken a dip in the hot tub.
On my way in, I caught myself thinking "Must hurry to TV." That's when I realized I had to seriously do this. It starts when I went into the hot tub: 7:00 p.m. I've since gotten out, showered, changed clothes and started cleaning the dishes. Just now, even writing this, Cinder nudged me for attention. I'll get back to her later.
So here are my rules: No TV, no reading of any kind (instruction, e-mail, magazines, books or even their titles), no music, no games. No media, period. I can talk on the phone, but I can't make any calls (this is a compromise). Generally, I should be alone with my thoughts. I can create media, such as writing, making music, animation, or any type of art. I can work in the yard or excercise. So here I go, at least until noon tomorrow.
